Round pen Anstruther

Round Pen Anstruther

Ovenstone Equine offers round pen facilities to meet the needs of your horse overlooking the Firth of Forth and the East Neuk of Fife.

Round pens, sometimes called bullpens, are specialist enclosures used for horse training. For the horse to be able to turn and perform various movements, including those required for dressage, the diameter of the pen must be at least thirty feet.

Our round pen in Anstruther is designed to cater to many different types of horses. The pen has high railings to prevent feral animals from jumping out of the enclosure and creating a hazard. It also has closely-spaced rails which give the fence a lot of strength and also help to prevent horses from seeking escape.

Our round pen facilities are ideal for domesticated horses who don’t fear people. Facilities are built to exact standards to prevent damage and provide the safest possible enclosure for both horses and riders.

How To Use Our Round Pen

Round pens initially originated in Spain where horsemen used them to train horses. The concept was later exported to the United States to help cowboys prepare horses for work on the ranch. Later, in Europe, round pens became the go-to training venue for classical dressage, assisting in western riding training.

Round pens are a critical invention in the history of horse training. The enclosed space allows a more intense interaction between horse and handler than conventional paddocks or open fields.

You can use round pens for many types of training, including for riding, and longeing and liberty work. It’s also suitable for free exercise and turnout.

The most common use of round pens today is training. However, you may also want to use them as a venue for the first few rides of a new horse, or when riding a particularly mature horse. It’s also a safe environment for new riders to practice their skills on experienced horses.

Occasionally, experienced riders will use round pens for training their animals in more advanced movements. These venues are for when focus and control are of utmost importance.
